iPhone 14 Pro Might Surprise Buyers With Weird Display Cutouts

iPhone 14 Pro Rumored To Come With A Pill AND A Hole-Punch.

As per display supply chain expert Ross Young, Apple might go for a design that includes both a circular and a pill-shaped cutout at the top.

A fresh iPhone 14 Pro leak is here, and this one claims that Apple is going for a bizarre design that combines both a circular and a pill-shaped cutout to house the front camera and Face ID hardware. So far, the iPhone 14 Pro’s design has been a topic of hot debate in the leak community — even though the phone is about nine months away. First came the rumors of Apple ditching the wide boat-shaped notch that has been a staple on iPhones since 2017.

Then came claims that the iPhone 14 Pro and its Max sibling will adopt a circular hole punch for hosting the selfie camera, while the returning Touch ID has been moved under the screen. Some even went as far as predicting a Face ID hardware beneath the OLED panel. The most recent leaks predicted a pill-shaped cutout right at the center alongside the top edge. And as the rumors stirred chatter on social media, concept renders continued to speculate what that all would look like.

Now, display chain supply expert Ross Young has Tweeted an image of what looks like an engineering template for the iPhone 14 Pro. Young claims that the iPhone 14 Pro and its Max variant will adopt a 'hole and pill' cutout design, something that has never been attempted before by a smartphone brand. Interestingly, Young mentions that the smaller circular cutout won’t be visible, which means users will only see a pill-shaped cutout at the top. However, it is unclear how the individual Face ID elements — such as the dot projector, IR camera, and flood illuminator — have been arranged to accommodate the new design.

As Usual, Remain Skeptical With This Rumor

Young also mentions that the display will get some upgrades, especially in the peak brightness department. When asked how the new Face ID arrangement bodes for the future of an in-display biometric system, Young added that under-display Face ID is making progress, but the tech is not quite ready yet. He further added that such a system will likely appear on iPhones in 2023 or 2024. TFI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo also predicted a similar time frame for an in-display authentication system to appear on iPhones in the years to come.

The iPhone 14 Pro models will reportedly feature a beefier version of the A16 Bionic chip that offers more graphics cores compared to the iPhone 14. Kuo also predicted that the main camera on iPhone 14 Pro and its Max variant will rely on a 48-megapixel camera, up from the 12-megapixel sensor on the iPhone 13 Pro duo. The iPhone 14 Pro is also rumored to employ a titanium frame with rounded volume buttons and cameras that sit flush with the rear panel. But these are all nothing more than early rumors and speculations, so take them with a generous serving of skepticism.
